Student Interior Designers Often Learn About The History of Their Profession

In their training, student interior designers often learn about the history of their profession. This can be a really important way to give context to their subsequent careers. In this article, I will draw on my experience as an interior designer and educator to discuss the history of this exciting field.

The earliest professional interior designers were based in London – the British had become intrigued by Egyptian techniques of decorating household objects and wanted the same for themselves. London families became desperate to employ an interior designer to create magical spaces and accessorise their interiors. As interior designers came to be recognised as professionals, they increasingly found a need to draw on history to create fabulous results. This was particularly true when creating designs for historic London mansions or listed buildings – they saw historical reflections as a way of preserving the past while also looking to the future.

Architect : Art deco in American industrial design

The period between World War I and World War II is often referred to as the Art Deco years. The sleek, rectilinear forms and synthetic materials created a vision of the future. This vision was embraced by the thrill seekers of the 1920’s as well as Americans seeking an escape from the hardships of the 1930’s depression.

Art Deco design could be found everywhere from architecture to industrial design. It naturally lent itself to industrial design with its geometrical shapes; sweeping curves, clean parallel lines, and rounded corners that optimized value and appearance in an elegant, glamorous, functional, modern way. It was art incorporated into everyday life.

The early concept of Art Deco was meant to be a representation of luxury and wealth and initially it catered to the wealthy. It was characterized by materials such as exotic and inlaid woods, precious metals, tortoise shell, oriental lacquers, stainless steel, aluminum, chrome, Formica, sharkskin, zebra skin and Bakelite. The handcrafted look was an integral part of the early Art Deco period and was highly sought after. Craftsmanship was valued, particuarly by the rich and famous. Consequently, it became valued by the average American eager to have the same thing as the celebrities had.

This is especially important if you are in a foreign country which has its own language, and language difficulties will have to be overcome. You can basically go ahead and do it the foreign way, or you can insist on your way and expect to spend way more than is necessary.
