Preserving Topsoil With Mulch Mundelein, Illinois

Mulch Mundelein, or in any other city, is not just for slowing down weed growth. Mulch is not just for making gardens, trees and shrubs, and landscapes pleasing to the eye. Mulch plays a big role in natural conservation, including preserving topsoil, and if done correctly, adding to the layer of topsoil.

Mulch protects vegetables, plants and trees & flowers in several ways, including lowering the temperature of soil in the summer and giving soil protection from cold in the winter. It also locks in a lot of moisture that would otherwise evaporate.

The mulch that might look the best to the eye is wood shreds or chips. It is not always the most ideal, though, and in one case, it might be the worst option. Take the brown wood shreds, for instance. They give your landscaping a beautiful look, but they do not contribute to the topsoil, which the world is in dire need of.

And, if you use white wood chips, that can be devastating to the surrounding plant life. It takes large amounts of nitrogen out of the soil, and can damage the plant life it is supposed to be protecting.

The brown chips would be perfect if you compost them first and you make sure they are rotten (fully composted) before using them. The reason, again, has to do with nitrogen. During the process of composting, all the available sources of nitrogen are used. Nitrogen from the soil would be taken away from plant life, if the matter has not fully composted, but fully composted material will slowly become a part of the soil.

You do not have to compost mulch if you replace it regularly to keep from rotting on the soil. Do not simply add more mulch, but actually replace the old mulch, to prevent it from starting to decompose and steal nitrogen.

That way, with only one exception — adding to the layer of topsoil — you will be getting all the benefits of mulching. As stated, these include, improving the look of the landscape, slowing down weed growth, preventing the soil from extreme hot or cold and keeping the moisture in the soil.

Of all the benefits of mulching, the most important one is made possible when you use organic mulch, like leaves and roots, stumps and manure, or bark that has been fully composted. This will break down and become a part of the topsoil. The loss of topsoil in the past several decades, around the world, is a frightening development with direct consequences to our future generations. So, as you mulch Mundelein, or anywhere else, be sure to add a layer of fully composted mulch that is at least 3 inches deep, and as it breaks down, replace it with more.
