The valve system regulates the handle of the faucet so that when you lower or raise the handle you will be able to control the flow of the water coming from the faucet. First thing first, make sure that you shut off the water for your bathtub. The shutoff is usually located inside bathroom. Shutting of the bathtub water, you will be able to change the faucet without being troubled with the water. Then you can continue your bathtub faucet replacement process by installing your new faucet.

You need to pop the screw cap off the handle and then wedge the flat bladed screwdriver under the screw cap. Unscrew the faucet handle screw with screwdriver and remove the handle by pulling straight off. Locate the two hexagonal nuts on the valve stem; the first is the packing nut. You will need to remove this nut by turning it counterclockwise with the wrench.

Then you remove the stem by turning the second hexagonal nut counterclockwise with the wrench. Pull the valve stem out of the socket. Apply a few drops of silicone grease to the valve stem and then continue with slipping the packing nut onto the stem. Then you must tighten the nut with the wrench and replace the faucet handle. Secure the faucet handle with the screw and then press the faucet cap cover back into place. This way, you have completed your bathtub faucet replacement.
