The key to non-toxic pest control is firstly understanding that if you are not going to use chemicals you will always have a certain population of pests in your garden. The trick is to keep the populations of these pests at such a level that they do little or no damage.

Man-made chemicals do the trick of immediately removing pests from your garden. Unfortunately, few are selective enough to have no impact on other animals which either feed on the plants or on the pests themselves. Also, by totally removing one pest, you might be removing the food source of a more valuable predator.

So, how to control the populations of the pests? As with most problems if we look closely enough, Mother Nature has put the answers right in front of our noses.

First, use companion planting. Companion planting works on several levels. First, many plants produce exudates around their roots – these are chemicals which inhibit the germination of plants (weeds) which would compete with the plant for nutrients, light and air. So, tagetes ,for example will help reduce weeds and provide you with lovely orange or yellow blooms. Tagetes attract hoverflies. Their larvae feed almost exclusively on aphids and greenfly. So, if you want to control aphids, plant tagetes near the susceptible plant.

The next tool in the armoury against pests is the non-toxic trap. Small pots sunk to soil level and filled with beer attact slugs – who are attracted by the smell- and they then drown. A preference to this is to put pieces of orange peel under upturned pots which will attract slugs and snails – the only thing is you then have to dispose of them yourself or take them and release them where they will do little harm, but this does prevent other animals drowning in the beer traps.

Sticky strips of material on trees will attract pest moths and flies which harm the trees. Using yellow strps appears to attract only codling moth and lfies – both of which are harmful pests.

Attracting birds into your garden will also help reduce the slug and snail population and you will find even the tiniest pool will attract amphibians who will happily devour flying pests and those they catch on the ground.

Maintaining a healthy soil is another way to ensure that populations of pests are reduced because beneficial organisms like earthworms will incorporate organic matter into the soil if the soil is mulched and left undisturbed. In turn this creates an aerobic environment which is good for beneficial bacteria and fungi and bad for harmful ones which tend to prefer anaerobic conditions. Ground beetles and millipedes will be atttracted to good soil and both of these devour pests.

Sometimes it is knowing what not to grow as well as knowing companion plants. Perennial weeds can act as secondary hosts for diseases like club root and rusts so making sure weeds are cleared from areas where you grow wanted plants will help keep the population down.

Keeping a meadow area, even a tiny one, will mean there are places where small animals like field mice and hedgehogs can hide and these eat small pests by the score.

Keeping plants well spaced and following what is called good horticutlural practice – by that I mean cleaning tools, not handling healthy plants after diseased ones, burning infected material and ensuring plants get adequate watering- are all ways to enable your plants to resist pest attack.

Crop rotation will ensure that populations of pests which prefer particular plant groups do not get out of control too. it also maintains nutrient levels as different crops take varying amounts of nutrients from the soil, and there are also many disease resistant varieties like ‘Maris Piper’ which is a potato resistant to potato cyst eel worm.

So, there is a huge amount we can do to provide non-toxic pest control.

What about biologically derived chemicals? I still say no because, while they degrade readily they are still non-specific and things like permithrin do a great deal of harm.

Watch nature and follow suit- you will not regret it.

Wooden furniture is a type of furniture available in the stores to be used in your houses to give it a look different from the usual contemporary look. Wooden furniture is available in various types of wood and almost all the furniture requirements of a household that you can think of are available in wooden furniture.

Wooden furniture includes wooden Cabinets, Wardrobes, Sofas, Tables (centre table, side table or dining table), Chairs, Boxes and Beds .Wooden furniture also includes small household items like Bookshelves, Stools, Sideboards, Planters and mirror frames and any thing that you can imagine in furniture.

The advantage of wooden furniture is that it gives your home a very classy look and only this type of furniture can give you the royal look. The royal line of furniture available in the stores and the queen beds available can give your bedroom that royal look which everybody dreams of.

Another advantage of the wooden furniture is that if the wood used is genuine than you have no maintenance problems for a very long time. A good piece of furniture can last for decades without much maintenance.

Another advantage of having a wooden furniture is that they are timeless pieces hence never go out of trend and can be placed along with contemporary furniture to give a classy as well as modern look to the house.

There is a major disadvantage of wooden furniture that they are very bulky and shifting such pieces from one place to another can be a grueling task.

Another disadvantage is that if the wood is not good than the furniture gets termites and also becomes shabby looking and has no solution but to be discarded. The high cost involved with wooden furniture as compared to its counterparts like cane furniture or steel furniture also acts as a low point for it.

The Wood that is used in making wooden furniture is of the high quality and the lower qualities are used for other purposes. All wood is made up of 60% cellulose and 28% lignin and the rest 12% is different in different types of woods that give them their distinct color, strength, and consistencies.

The cellulose and lignin give them their strength because of their cementing properties. The different types of woods used are hardwood obtained from deciduous trees like oak, cherry, maple and ash. Other than these some major contributors in wood for making household furniture are Mahogany(known foe its reddish brown color), Walnut(known for its fine texture), rosewood(famous for its dark reddish brown color), Teak(for its moisture-resistant quality ) and sheesham(known for its durability). Other than these there are types of softwood also used in making furniture like Pine, Hemlock, Cedar, Fir, Redwood and spruce.

How to upholster a small wooden chair

It is not hard to upholster any type of furniture in your home; in fact it is quite simple if you follow a few simple steps. That way you will not only improve the look but the value of your furniture at the same time. If you were to take it to a professional upholsterer it could prove to be very expensive. With a little patience and time well spent on your part you can save yourself a lot of money and the satisfaction of a job well done at the same time.

You never know your friends and neighbors may want you to show them how or even ask you to upholster something for them. This could lead to either a new hobby or a way to make a few extra dollars at home.

Have you ever gone into one of those old antique furniture places and seen those old chairs often covered with bright red upholstery and wished you had one just like it. Well this is your chance to experiment and give yourself a new challenge in your life and make it look just like them.

Start your first upholstering task on something easy so as to gain more experience and extra confidence, and then tackle the harder things. I intend show you how to upholster a small wooden chair for that reason.

You will need to have the right equipment before starting anything. You may not need all these items, it will depend on the type of seat you are upholstering and its condition.

You will need

Pliers Fabric for recovering Staples and or tacks Staple gun Adhesive glue Foam or padding may need to be replaced Screwdriver Sharp scissors Chisel with the V cutout, this will help pull out tacks or staples. Sandpaper

Step by step Instructions

Have a good look at your chair. Tip it upside down and push the padded seat out of the frame of the chair. Have a good look at the wooden frame. If it has dents or deep scratches then you will need to rub it back smooth with a piece of medium to fine sandpaper. Look at the joints are any of them loose if so try to squeeze some glue between the joints then push joints together. In an ideal world it would be good if you could clamp them together until dry. Sand it down again to remove any excess glue.

If you have a pale colored wood and would like to change the look you could give it a coat of jar-rah or similar stain. Then finish off with a coat of varnish when dry. It is important to leave overnight before applying another coat to make sure it is completely dry.

Now comes the challenging part. You will need to carefully remove the fabric from the padded seat. Make sure not to damage this fabric as you will be using this as the pattern for your new cover. You will have to pull out all the staples or tacks. Make sure you mark which is the back and which is the front on the wrong side with a pencil.

With this removed, look at the cushion itself. Some chairs have foam padding; others have springs with a crisscross webbing underneath to hold the springs in place. If the webbing has come loose you will need to stretch it tight and re-fix it in place. Make sure it is secure, as you do not want the springs to come loose.

If a foam padding you may need to replace the foam with new.

If possible, iron the fabric that you have taken off the seat. Otherwise your pattern may be cut short if it is not flat. Lay your pattern (piece you took of seat) on your new piece of fabric. Make sure you have the two right sides of the fabrics facing up, so you have them the same. Pin together and cut out allowing one centimeter extra all around just in case the scissors slip. It will be better to have it bigger than too small.

Load your staple gun with staples. Now lay your new piece of fabric with the right side facing down. Make sure you have it the right way as the back or front may be wider. Now place your seat padding upside down. Be careful to put it in the center of the fabric.

Fold the back up over onto the wood in the center of the back. Staple it. Fold it over at the center front and pull it tight and staple. Do the same at centre of each side. Make sure to keep it straight tight and flat.

Now gradually work your way across the back leaving the corners. Do the same at front then each side. Now fold the corners over and staple. Check that it is tight and flat. Be careful not to pull or stretch it out of shape. If it looks good put it back into the wooden frame, as long as the varnish is dry of course.

Now sit back and admire your handiwork. Were you game enough to choose some of that beautiful red material when learning how to upholster a chair or not. If not you can do that with the next one as you will now know how to do it next time.

Well, what do you think? It wasn’t too hard was it?

If you have ever wanted to work from home, then you can use these proven work at home tips to start making some money for yourself. Many people are skeptical about making money form their home, but it’s very much real… There are a lot of secrets and internet millionaires.

Here’s tip #1:

Work in a hot market that you are really passionate about. This allows you to want to work and feel comfortable writing and creating content for this market.

Tip #2:

Finding good and proven keywords for your business. These keywords are words that people actually search for in the search engines, and the people who are searching actually have the buying mindset. Find these keywords and you’ll have buyers lining up to buy from you.

Tip #3:

The third tip is having a really hypnotic sales copy. This allows you to actually make sales from the visitors you attract. You really need to get 1% or more of your visitors to put money in your pocket or you are virtually wasting your time.

Most people have no idea what they are doing, even after reading a vague ebook on how to work from home like all the internet millionaires out there.

But what you do not know is that there are a lot of things that those ebooks leave out. You never get to see the actual HOW’s, WHERE’s and WHEN’s in these ebooks, but that’s obvious!

Who would expose how to make a million dollars? Who would expose how to make $1,500 a day for little or no money?

Not many at all…

That’s why people can really scam others online… but knowing the tips above will help you understand the formula.

The formula is actually simple, simple, simple… But it’s not EASY. The actual formula is right here..

Content + website + traffic + list = CASH

Now all you need to do is build all of these stepping stones and you’ll have money flowing into your accounts.

The secret is to know exactly what to do in order to get all of these building blocks to work together with each other… How to actually make each component flow together with the other, and how to build that email list from scratch…

That’s the real secret, because what most ebooks expose or reveal is the actual formula, but never the HOW, or even the WHY… Which leaves a lot of work at home students confused…

In their training, student interior designers often learn about the history of their profession. This can be a really important way to give context to their subsequent careers. In this article, I will draw on my experience as an interior designer and educator to discuss the history of this exciting field.

The earliest professional interior designers were based in London – the British had become intrigued by Egyptian techniques of decorating household objects and wanted the same for themselves. London families became desperate to employ an interior designer to create magical spaces and accessorise their interiors. As interior designers came to be recognised as professionals, they increasingly found a need to draw on history to create fabulous results. This was particularly true when creating designs for historic London mansions or listed buildings – they saw historical reflections as a way of preserving the past while also looking to the future.

THE ANCIENT ROMANS

In Ancient Rome, citizens demanded comfort, luxury and wealth. These elements are still important in the work of interior designers across the world today. The lavish decorations, tapestries and iconic stonework today remain as timeless and popular in London as in Tokyo or Sydney. The Ancient Romans adored bespoke furniture and loved quality textiles and expensive fabrics.

MONASTIC TIMES

After the collapse of Roman rule, the church assumed power and largely discouraged the most creative interior designers. Opulent interiors were taken out and interior designers were instructed to install quiet and simple oak panels with dark lines and sharp edges. This influence was felt throughout Europe – from London all the way to Florence.

RENAISSANCE AND REVIVAL

The Renaissance saw the emergence of professional French or French-inspired interior designers. It was a new age of elegance and sophistication, which saw the rebuilding of the London Interior Designer community and a fresh take on creative and beautiful living spaces. A “palatial” feel was rediscovered, and interior designers began to take advantage of new transport axes going through London to the continent and to the Americas in order to rediscover their profession and herald the next generation of design.

This brings to an end my article on how the work of interior designers has changed over the ages. In my next article, I’ll reflect on how interior designers use interior fashions for great effect.
