Crates and Barrel. On the 7th December 1962, Gordon and Carole Segal started their first store that was placed on Wells Street in Chicago, United States. The idea to open Crates and Barrel was actually come after they were married and had their honeymoon in Europe.
Segal saw so many attractive and long-lasting products that came in a very affordable price. The thought of having this products marketed in United States was beginning to change the mindset of the couple.
They finally started their own store that provided useful yet beautiful products that was targeted to the market of young couples who were just married. Nowadays, Crates and Barrel is placed in Northbrook, Illinois, United States and has more than 170 outlet stores that are spread throughout the United States and become on of the biggest American retail stores. They specifically play in the market of household utilities, both interior and exterior furnishings, home decorations, and many other things that are related with home related products.
The official name for the company is Euromarket Designs Business Incorporated with 96% of investment is in possession of the Otto group, or also known as Otto (GmbH & Co KG), the world’s biggest mail order company. Just like Pottery Barn Business Incorporated, Crates and Barrel nowadays provides a different kind of high-class and exclusive household stuff, furniture, and various other accessories for housing. This company is the founder of a new style of house designing, named the “vignette” style. This style is actually a decoration of the items that are arranged together, creating an identity from the room that they are placed into.
